How to Find Available Local Musicians

How to find available local musicians
It can sometimes be frustrating when you feel like you’re the only kickass rock star in a fifty mile radius of your city, but chances are that there is a whole pool of other people just like you trying to find other musicians in the area – you just need to find ways to meet them.

Go to more gigs
It seems obvious but what most musicians don’t realise is that to increase the likelihood of meeting new musicians in the area you need to go to the places where local musicians hang out, which is likely to be your local gig venue – whether it’s a pub, a small rock bar, or a full blown professional music venue – that is where you are most likely to meet local musicians.

Classified websites
Although there are countless websites listing classifieds for musicians available in areas all over the world, I would only recommend using these if you are from an area that has a large population or is well known simply because the chances of finding a musician in a small unknown area is very slim and probably not worth your time.

Twitter
I would recommend using Twitter to find musicians, if you use a site like Topsy you can search for users in specific areas that are relevant to a specific term, for example your keyword might be ‘guitarist’ and your location may be London. You could also use the Twitter Search function to find people who have recently tweeted about a certain keyword – for example you might try looking for ‘recording studio in London’ or ‘London record label’ to find people who have tweeted that keyword, then you can see what musicians have been retweeting and interacting with them, chances are they’ll also be musicians in that area.

Advertising
Another tactic that has proven to be particularly effective when done in a personalised way is to use pay per click advertising on a site like Facebook.com – you can create an advert that targets all guitarists in your local area of a certain gender or between a certain age. Google also has a pay per click advertising platform called Adwords, but it is more expansive and does not have demographic targeting.

Ask people
One of the easiest and most commonly overlooked methods of finding musicians in the area is to just ask people. Start with friends and family to see if there’s anyone who they can introduce you to, but if not then try to get in contact with any local music companies who might be able to help you.
