Ten Scary Misconceptions that Musicians Still Believe

Do you like this story?

We’ve all been there, we’re all guilty of trying to further our music careers in some of the most downright backwards ways known to man, but my theory is that the more we laugh at our shoddy mistakes, the more we will see just how shoddy they are and therefore reduce the likelihood of repeating them. Well.. that’s the theory!

Here are some of the most common and humorous misconceptions amongst musicians (I have definitely been guilty of most of these!)

10. Sending demos to people I’ve never met or spoken to will result in mega opportunities.

9. Spending money on awesome gear will make us more likely to get signed by a record label, because it’ll make us sound the shit.

8. Music industry pros can’t get enough of how many plays and friends I have on Myspace.

7. We need a booking agent / manager because it’ll make us look more professional.

6. When we get a record deal, we’ll all be sitting in lambo’s sippin’ margaritas in St. Tropez :D

5. Marketing my music is the record labels job, we don’t need to learn all this crazy marketing jazz.

4. If we start selling more products other than music, our fans will think we’re sell outs.

3. We don’t need to hang around at gigs to capture fans email addresses, they’ll find us on Twitter or Facebook after anyways.

2. We should send our demos to radio stations and promoters of all genres, because any promotion is good promotion, after all I’m positive that Classic FM listeners will love our new thrash metal release.

1. Why waste time finding out a demo recipients real name when they probably love being called ‘whomever it may concern’ or ‘A&R scout’.

I’m sure this list could extend way beyond what it is, so please feel free to add any funny misconceptions that i’ve left out in the comments below.
