Submit Your Music for Rock Band Gameplay!

MTV Games and Harmonix have recently announced that Rock Band Network  are about to authorise musicians, record labels and recording studios with the tools used to create interactive songs for the popular PS3 and Xbox 360 video game Rock Band.

The simple midi sample converting software is combined with an easy to use online uploading platform that enables any musician to easily upload a song to the Rock Band Network, which if approved by the gods that sit around at Rock Band HQ blasting out Metallica and drinking Jack Daniels all day long, will then go live on the Rock Band online store.

I think the really cool thing about this is that it offers musicians an opportunity to create a new revenue stream that provides fans with a funner way to interact with their favourite music, who knows we may even start seeing tweets and messages saying “Download our new track for your Xbox 360 on Rockband Network’ It’s possible? According to the Rock Band website musicians will be able to sell their songs between 50 cents to $3 and earn a 30% commission on sales (what!? 30%!?)

To join the Rock Band Creators Network you are required to pay an annual sign up fee of $100 which gives you access to the specialised software. Although this is obviously a nice way for Rock Band to monetize the service, I think this will help to filter out every Joe Bloggs with a free Saturday uploading sub standard music to the system, which ultimately will provide a better service to Rock Band fans, however, I also think a $100/year subscription fee is a little bit rich considering that the musician will only be paid a commission of 30%.

What are your thoughts on this new service? Would you pay $100 / year to upload your songs to Rock Band?
