Get Noticed
by Marcus Taylor & Rob Lawrence
Although not specifically aimed at musicians, I co-wrote Get Noticed with Rob Lawrence, a renowned creativity coach and musician in the UK. The book explores the psychology behind how successful people get noticed and explains how you can raise awareness of yourself in a busy space, regardless of whether you're trying to raise your personal brand, your story, or most likely in your case; your music. I have recommended this book to a number of musicians who have enjoyed it. You can read a review of what Nikki Loy (a singer songwriter from the UK) thought of it here.

Crush it!
by Gary Vaynerchuk
I strongly recommend reading Crush it if you're interested in learning about how to use social media
to build a personal brand for yourself as an artist. This book is very motivational and a great kick up the arse for any dawdlers! I think the biggest message in this book for musicians is that if you want to succeed you need to stand out and work harder than any other band out there. Success in the music industry takes a lot of hustle!

The New Rules of Marketing & PR
by David Meerman Scott
This was one of the first books I picked up on digital marketing and it has some great insights into how marketing has changed and how you should be thinking when it comes to selling your product. Although not specifically about music marketing, this book is worth a read if you're interested in learning more about social marketing and PR.

Music Business: The Essential Guide to the Law and the Deals
by Ann Harrison
I recommend this book as a primer to your music industry knowledge. Although it gets quite deep in music law, it's a very interesting overview of record deals and there are some very interesting case studies of when things have gone wrong for artists who haven't seeked legal advice. I would say the main takeaway from this book is to always invest in a good lawyer, regardless of where you're at in your music career.

Music Success in Nine Weeks
by Ariel Hyatt
This is one of my favourite books by an incredibly knowledgeable music marketer who I admire. Although the title of the book is a little tongue in cheek, Ariel's 9 week approach to building a foundation of music marketing knowledge is great, definitely worth a read. Rob (the co-author of my other book Get Noticed) also took Ariel's course for the nine weeks, and wrote a review on it here.

The Art of SEO
by Eric Enge & Rand Fishkin
SEO is a very rapidly changing industry and what was written a year ago probably isn't fully applicable today. This guide is one of the most up to date and trustworthy sources of information on SEO. I personally believe SEO is a largely untapped marketing channel for musicians, although more and more bands are exploring it by the day. If you're new to search marketing or want to learn more, this is the book to go for.
