How it Started

The Musician’s Guide is a global music business education company that provides musicians with the tools and knowledge needed to build a successful career in the music industry.

Founded by Marcus Taylor in 2009, The Musician’s Guide has grown from being a collection of books on music marketing to a website that attracts over half a million musicians and music professionals from over 195 countries.

In 2005, Marcus received his first record deal with a small independent label. After three years of working with different labels, Marcus decided to set up his own independent label, which taught him two things: 1) that he hated managing artists, and 2) that he loved marketing them.

Upon this discovery, Marcus began working for a digital marketing agency, where he became fascinated by how far ahead other industries were in comparison to the music industry with online marketing. He wrote a book called The Musician’s Guide and set up this website to share what he was learning with other musicians.

Since then, The Musician’s Guide has become a popular website incorporating courses, books, and hundreds of articles. Our resources have been used to teach hundreds of thousands of artists and music professionals how to effectively market music and build careers in the music industry.

In 2013, Marcus was awarded ‘Visionary of the Year’ by Midem. He has become one of the most sought-after digital marketers in the music industry, and his company Venture Harbour now works with some of largest companies in the music industry.

Marcus continues to share his insights with musicians today.
